PRESERVATION OF FERTILITY

Do you want to be a mother but you think that the right moment has not come yet? Are you worried that if you wait, the possibilities of becoming pregnant will decrease significantly?

Are you going to undergo a chemotherapy or radiation therapy, but you do not want to renounce being a mother in the future?

We explain what your options for postponing pregnancy with high chances of success and the help of assisted reproduction techniques are.

When is preservation of fertility treatment indicated?

The goal of preservation of fertility treatment is pregnancy, not immediately but later in the future.

This can be the best option if a woman does not wish to give up on having children but wants to postpone motherhood, or in cancer cases where chemotherapy or radiation therapy must be applied. In these cases, preservation of fertility treatment would be carried out before oncological treatment.

Being a mother after cancer

Good news is that survival rates in young patients affected by cancer have increased significantly. Unfortunately, chemotherapy and radio therapy treatments lead to the loss of oocytes and ovarian atrophy. These changes, in most cases, are irreversible as the ovaries have a fixed number of germ cells that do not regenerate.

A perfectly healthy pregnancy can be achieved after cancer and chemotherapy with the help of preservation of fertility treatment.

What kinds of preservation of fertility treatment exist?

Here we explain various kinds of preservation of fertility treatment that you could consider, with our help and depending on the case.

Cryopreservation of oocytes

This method involves a cycle of ovarian stimulation in order to retrieve eggs that are then frozen by a specific technique called vitrification.

Embryo cryopreservation

Eggs are fertilised in vitro and the resulting embryos are frozen. There is far more experience with this technique than with cryopreservation of oocytes, but it is not certain that the developed embryos will be transferred in the future.

Ovarian tissue cryopreservation (in girls or adult women)

Although it is not a consolidated treatment option and it should be viewed as an experimental technique, it can be an option in some cases.  Ovarian tissue is removed by surgery and preserved by freezing so that it is implanted back again in the future.

Semen cryopreservation

In cases of men diagnosed with cancer, sperm sample is provided and preserved by freezing before cancer treatment.
